Evolution

A diploid plant population produces a tetraploid individual through chromosome doubling. The tetraploid can reproduce successfully with other tetraploids, but crosses between diploids and tetraploids produce offspring with severe chromosome-pairing problems. Why could chromosome doubling promote speciation without geographic separation?
